Early Fall Steelhead Fishing Season

Cooler nights in September and October precipitation trigger the first strong push of steelhead. Flows stabilize, long glides set up well, and the swing comes alive. Drift boat coverage opens prime water and puts you in front of moving fish early in the run.

Peak Fall Steelhead Season

Mid October through November is prime time on the Saugeen. Fresh chrome spreads through the system and responds well to confident swings in broad runs and deep lanes. Average fish range from 4 to 6 pounds, with larger fish landed each season. A Saugeen River steelhead guide keeps you on productive water all day.

Late Fall & December Fishing

December delivers quiet banks and decisive grabs. Colder water concentrates fish in softer seams and deeper slots, rewarding slower swings and precise presentations. Heavier tips and Skagit heads keep the fly in the zone, turning short windows into memorable hookups on this big, powerful river.

Big Water, Big Steelhead

About The Saugeen River in Ontario

Known simply as “The Geen” to many Ontario anglers, the Saugeen River is one of the province’s most productive and exciting systems for guided steelhead fishing trips. Stretching through the Bruce Peninsula and flowing into Lake Huron, the Saugeen combines volume, structure, and access that make it ideal for swinging flies and drift boat fishing.

Our guiding for steelhead here runs from October through December 31st, with the first strong pushes of fish arriving as cool nights settle in and autumn rains lift the water levels. The peak occurs from mid-October through November. December remains a hidden opportunity for those willing to embrace colder climate with less crowded river banks.
