Spring Steelhead Fishing
By late April, the Maitland comes back to life. The banks green up, the air warms, and steelhead fill the river once again. Post-spawn fish and fresh arrivals move through the system, creating steady action and exciting variety. Clear water and gentle flows make it the perfect time to fish floating or intermediate lines, swinging classic Spey flies or waking dries across glassy runs. Each take is sharp, fresh, and full of energy.

Fall Steelhead Fishing
When the October rains arrive and water levels rise, it’s game on. The Maitland fills with fresh chrome steelhead, eager to chase swung flies through long, smooth runs. Fish average 4 to 7 pounds, with larger bruisers hooked every season. These steelhead are known for their raw power, ripping into your backing, testing drags, and leaving anglers breathless after every encounter.

Winter Steelhead Fishing
As late fall turns to winter, the Maitland River offers a quieter and more deliberate fishing experience. Crowds thin, the air is crisp, and the steelhead that remain are strong, settled, and ready to test your skill. This is when the river slows down and every cast counts. Heavy sink tips, Skagit heads, and patient swings unlock some of the most rewarding grabs.

Guided Steelhead Fishing on The Maitland
Fishing the Maitland is a full-body experience long casts, strong grabs, and runs that will test every knot. Whatever the reason, the fight is fierce, and landing a Maitland steelhead is a badge of honour.
A drift boat trip is the best way to cover the Maitland’s wide water and access its most productive runs. Each full-day guided float with River Run Guiding runs eight hours and accommodates up to two anglers.
